Decimals Pt1 Slide 1 of 7 What is a decimal?

The idea of the decimal is to count in 10`s, after all we have ten fingers and toes and we use them to count. The word comes from the Latin decimus meaning tenth. Whilst the decimal system is the most commonly used today there are and have been several other counting systems based on counting in 4`s, 25`s, 15`s and many others (look here for more information.) Binary is the number system of computers and counts in twos.

In thinking about decimals I want to use the illustration of a chocolate bar. The bar is made up of chunks, 10 rows of 10 chunks. It comes packed in bags of 10 bars and these are packed in boxes of 10 bags.
